Thai Peace Day
On August 16th, 1945, following the surrender of Japanese occupation forces in Thailand, the Thai government proclaimed null and void its predecessor's declaration of war against the USA and the UK. The proclamation was made by regent and senior statesman Pridi Banomyong. The government was then led by Khuang Abhaiwongse. Both men played prominent roles in the Thai resistance movement, Seri(Free) Thai, during World War Two. August 16th was subsequently named "Thai Peace Day".
Today, Thanpuying Poonsuk Banomyong, Pridi's widow, will attend the unveiling, in the main hall at Thammasat University, of a memorial to Thammasat and the Free Thai Movement.
